Trauma Informed Care

This is a free event designed for members of the public clinical mental health workforce in Victoria, (staff employed at Area Mental Health Services, Forensicare or mental health staff from RCH). For example, a social worker working in mental health at Austin Health. Staff from MHCSSs, ACCHOs, AOD or other partner organisations may also attend. Please note, if you do register for this event and it is not clear you are part of the intended audience, your registration will be confirmed two weeks prior to the event start date, or earlier.

Note: Dual Diagnosis peer workers were involved in the design and delivery of this training and have reviewed the content.

Get an introduction to Trauma Informed Care principles and practices. This workshop will provide an overview of trauma and introduce some of the principles of trauma informed care. Participants will explore some of the many impacts of trauma and how to use a strengths-based approach when working with people who have experienced trauma.

The session will be presented by a clinician and a dual diagnosis peer worker.

• What is Trauma and Trauma Informed Care
• The impact of Trauma on our brains and how it can influence our memories, thinking and behaviours
• How Trauma related care has developed in the mental health field
• What does trauma informed care look like and how it can be used in your clinical setting
• Why language is important

Presenter:

Jeff Weitzel, Centre for Mental Health Learning

Jeff is one of the Learning and Practice Development Coordinators with the Centre for Mental Health Learning and an occupational therapist. He has previously worked in Dual Diagnosis with both adults and young people and as a trainer as well as other roles across clinical and community mental health. He enjoys facilitating training on a wide range of subjects across alcohol and other drugs and mental health.

Rhiannon Koppel, SDDS

Rhi is the only Dual Diagnosis peer worker within the Southern Dual Diagnosis Service of Monash Health. Rhi is passionate about using her lived experience to reduce stigma, empower and educate consumers and workers with up to date and informative harm reduction and relapse prevention strategies.

Rhi’s lived experience of mental health, substance use and family violence and work role allow her to bring a deeper understanding of the complexities of trauma and the importance of trauma-informed care to her work.
